Steyla Technologies,Inc. spamxd protection system is a simple tool that fights most common sources of spam. The MTA (mail system) is involved only after spamxd has checked the sending host of the email.

Depending on the configuration, spamxd will reject mail from:

Hosts without reverse mapping;
Hosts with numerical parts in the domain name, indicating dynamic assigned DSL-/cable customers;
Hosts listed in DNSBL lists (like SORBS);
Hosts locally blacklisted;
Hosts with records in banned nameservers;

If configured, hosts will also be subjected to a bounce-once verification. spamxd will bounce new hosts with a 'Temporarily Busy' error and expectects the sending server to re-send the message after some minutes. If the sending server complies, it will be added to the list of verified hosts.

All of the above can be overridden with local white-lists to allow some non-conforming mail to pass thorugh the gateway.
